Identity theft is a growing problem in communities worldwide and security officials are working harder than ever using the latest technologies in dealing with the people responsible and making sure that innocent individuals keep their identity safe from that point forward. However, identity thieves are relentless in finding new ways to circumvent these efforts and they are now taking things to extreme by targeting children. Children are attractive targets because they are defenseless and more difficult for authorities to trace since age isn't asked in identity-theft surveys.

The consequences of letting child identity theft occur can be very scary and greatly affect the child's future. It is up to the parents to make sure that their child's identity is fully protected by keeping these guidelines in mind because kids need an identity protection plan even more than adults nowadays!

Keep Kids Safe Online

Never Give out any Personal Information in Online Forms

Kids of the new generation are getting acquainted with the web at much younger ages. Accessing the Internet is fun and good education for kids that will grow up in an advanced digital age. Growing by sharing personal information online isn't the way to go because this is how identity thieves obtain the information in the first place. To make things simple, never have your child submit any personal information in any web form regardless of the source. Most of the websites allow you to supply some fake information to keep your child fully anonymous so you can always go with that method.

Avoid Public Social Networking Sites and Other Communities

The first guideline is heavy on restrictions, but that won't change the fact that many kids in the future will socialize online to make new friends or work together on fun tasks. These online communities should be avoided in general as many of the details submitted are posted in public. If the information stays public for a long period of time, removing the information can be close to impossible since public search engines collect data. If there is really a need to join a social network, at least find one that has a good privacy policy and is flexible in the customization of privacy settings.

Make Sure your Computer is Safe from Data Theft

Following the first guideline ensures total safety, but there might be a very trusted site that cannot accept anything, but accurate information from the name down to the address. Submitting information in those types of websites and services should keep your identity safe, but if your system has malware running in the background, that data might be retrieved by the individuals that are responsible for the malware presence. Make sure you have an updated virus scanner running at all times before submitting any personal information.
Your web browser and operating system should also be updated to detect any phishing sites that steal personal information. Look closely on the website you are in before entering personal data and see if you are in the right place.

Keeping your children safe from identity theft is essential to avoid any credit report related problems in the future. If you found out that your child has been victimized, contact any of the national credit bureaus and ask for the accounts to be removed along with other advice to minimize the impact caused.

If you suspect your child's identity has been stolen or comprised, take immediate action and view at the identity protection plan hub and call the proper administrative offices right away.

Many parents are unaware that their child has become a victim of identity theft until it's time to start filling out financial aid paperwork when applying to college.

The child then learns that they've defaulted on car loans, have "x" amount of dollars on credit cards, etc.

Parents need to be vigilent when it comes to protecting SS #s. Identity theives are very educated when it comes to utilizing personal data.
