Ok, so I have totally been on this buying spree so its inspriing me to write Hubs about what I am buying, looking at, etc. This time it was a kitchen clock- I know.. kinda boring, but the one I bought is cool! Enjoy the hub.

A great chef once said you can live without a wall clock in your living room but not in your kitchen.  He was probably always concerned that what's cooking in the oven is starting to burn, or that it's time to whip up a meal or snack, and a kitchen clock provides the perfect cue.  Chef or no chef, people have reasons for hanging a clock in the kitchen and they're not always to tell time.  In fact, more than the functional value, the decorative element is always a strong factor.  A kitchen can use an artistic touch and a clock can make just the right statement.  You'd be surprised how creative and versatile kitchen clocks can be, and how they can transform or enhance the character of that important part of your home.

What's Your Type?

There is a wide variety of kitchen clocks available and finding one is a matter of personal taste-and necessity.  Ideally, what you hang on your wall should match the theme or style of your kitchen, and the size should also be proportional to the space.  Just as you don't throw in random ingredients into the broth, you also have to blend your kitchen clock into the kitchen environment or it will spoil the appetite of visitors.

  • The Arty Type. If you love art, there are kitchen clocks that feature distinctive retro artworks reminiscent of master paintings. For one, try a delightful spread of fruits or vegetables printed on a dial that's shaped like a plate. If you love a mid-afternoon banter with friends or family members over a cup of beverage, a clock with a teapot or cappuccino design would add to the cozy atmosphere. You can also take it a little further and install-yes, as in a piece of performance art-a clock that, at first glance, looks like a shelf complete with teapot, saucers, and cups hanging from the bottom.
  • The Modern Type. A contemporary kitchen with stainless steel appliances, glass tables, and funky wall colors can complement the look with a plastic or metal clock with minimalist feel. A simple digital clock set on a stainless steel disc could do the trick. Interesting shapes and graphics, such as the outline of a champagne glass, can also be used.
  • The Country Type. When wood predominates, or there is a folksy or rural element in the kitchen realm, clocks with birds, flowers, or farm animals abound. You can also have your fill of meadowlands and images of ingredients such as cheeses and herbs.
  • The Classic Type. Antique wall clocks fall under this category. Again, hanging an antique piece should match the décor, and having one can work well if you want to highlight a certain period or architecture.

  • The Unique Type. You can customize your kitchen clock with your choice of images or designs. Particular favorites are photos of pets, which you can take yourself, and which some specialist suppliers can print on standard-shaped dials. Other ideas combine the pendulum feature with modern illustrations. An example would be a fish in a chef hat holding a plate with a flipping tail to boot. Other examples: a plate dial with spoon and fork hands and a piece of steak swaying at the bottom; a wine bottle with a wedge of cheese as the pendulum; or a cat with wagging tail ever on lookout to pounce on a tasty morsel.
  • The Funny Type. When visitors are about to arrive and the main course isn't quite ready, a touch of humor can take the heat off the tense situation. An example of a kitchen clock with a funny twist is a toast clock-just a piece of lightly-browned toast on the wall to remind that everything in the kitchen should be cooked just right, or we can all laugh off the boo-boo when it happens. Another example is a smiling sun clock with spoons, forks, and knives sticking outward as rays.
  • The Creepy Type. Alright, some of you love the gothic look, and you can indulge with skull and crossbones kitchen clocks. There are variations on this pirate icon ranging from metallic pieces that incorporate other elements like a Celtic cross. A less creepy but nonetheless weird design is that of a monkey clock. If one likes to get really heavy, I suppose it would be easy to customize a kitchen clock that is shaped like a bat or a tombstone. It's a free country, right?

There are some very cool kitchen clocks out there - you get a bit more leeway there I think.
