Nightgowns for women come in a wide variety of colors, style and materials and believe it or not they serve a variety of purposes as well. While many people think of a nightgown as simply sleeping attire for women, to most women they are so much more. Many women not only sleep in a nightgown but, use them to lounge in comfort, to feel beautiful or attractive, to provide additional warmth on a cold winters night and to attract that special someone in their lives.

Nightgowns run the gambit from skimpy little silk and lace confections that barely cover the skin to full flannel nightgowns that can be high necked and fall to cover the feet to everything in between. Most women have several nightgowns and the one they choose to wear at night will depend on the weather, their own mood or the purpose they want the night gown to choose.

Nightgowns that are made from tee shirt material and resemble long tee shirts are worn mainly by younger women who want something light weight and comfortable to sleep in and are not worried about making any kind of statement. These types of nightgowns can run in length from short and fairly skimpy to just below the knee. While some middle aged women also like the comfort of these nightgowns they are primarily sold in stores catering to younger women.

Silky polyester type nightgowns are usually worn by middle age and older women who want a comfortable night gown to sleep in. Many of these nightgowns resemble shifts either with or without sleeves. Nightgowns made out of the same type of polyester material that are skimpy and have a lot of lace inserts are normally worn by both younger and older women who can't afford real silk but either want to feel attractive as a boost to their self esteem or who are feeling romantic.

Flannel nightgowns are loved by women of all ages for their warmth. These nightgowns are great for those cold winter nights providing an extra blanket of warmth while they are sleeping.

When choosing a nightgown for the woman in your life, the best thing to consider is the woman's age and the styles of nightgowns she is most comfortable in. Long flannel nightgowns with flowers or cute designs are often a great hit with mothers and grandmothers at Christmas time and lighter weight cotton and polyester nightgowns make great mother day gifts. However, for those of you who have a young or even not so young wife or girlfriend at home choosing a nightgown that has a romantic aura is a better choice any time of year. Choosing a nightgown that tells the special woman in your life you think she is desirable is sure to be a hit.

Keep in mind however, in my experience that most women do not like receiving nightgowns from men who they have not been intimate with unless they are close family members and knows their individual tastes. Nightgowns can make great gifts for most of the women in your life as long as you take the time to learn exactly what styles and materials each woman feels the most comfortable in.
